Niche apps

One of the first projects I undertook upon returning to Gannett was an initiative to create a simple process for creating and rolling out mobile/tablet apps to serve various niche topics that are of value to our local newspaper markets.

The majority of the applications created were sports based, but we experimented with other types as well.

The sports apps were more successful than the non-sports apps, but in the end, the reliability of our statistics provider proved too difficult to overcome.

My team and I were responsible for the design of the overall user experience.

The main content for each app was primarily articles, but we also supported galleries and videos.

Each sports app also had the features necessary for team sports: rosters, schedules, standings, etc.

We also built a live scoring feature called “Game On” – similar to the Gamecast feature used on ESPN. However, we ran into problems with our stats provider, which made it too expensive to continue offering that feature.

The majority of these apps are in the process of being shut down, since we’re moving away from an advertising model, towards a subscriber-based system.
