Gannett has experimented with many different niche topics, as a way of developing alternative revenue streams to subscriptions and advertising.
The Desert Sun, a newspaper in Palm Springs, Ca, had rebranded an existing affluent magazine, to have more of an adventurous, exploring spirit, in an effort to connect with Millennials and Gen X.
As part of the initiative, we developed the Desert Adventure Club so readers could actually live the experiences they read about in the magazine.
Each year-long series features eight events, including workshops, wine tastings, horseback riding, and photography workshops.
Through the club, individuals could explore the beauty of the desert with others who share the same adventurous spirit. Desert magazine organized exclusive outings for the mind, body and spirit so that people could experience the Coachella Valley and surrounding areas like never before.
We created a custom membership page, which serves as the main direct landing page for the magazine, and explains the value of the membership for the consumer and features upcoming events, photos of past events, highlighted magazine stories, and sponsors.
This site was created using the same content management platform that the Desert Sun uses for their web site, organized via a series of tags, and assigned a specific template.
My role was to design the look and feel of the page, and work with development to create a simple process that would make the page as easy to maintain as possible.
Similar to Adventure Club, XAZ was created so that individuals could explore the beauty of the Arizona desert with others who share the same adventurous spirit. AZCentral organizes events for the members – everything from urban excursions to outdoor expeditions.
