05 Feb The Wall – an investigative series
Early on in my journalism career, I was lucky enough to work on a project that was nominated for the highest award in journalism – the Pulitzer Prize. That particular project didn’t win, but it was still an incredible thrill to be nominated.
Surprisingly enough, in 2017, I was part of another Pulitzer-nominated project, and this time it took home the prize.
This project pulled in editors, reporters, multimedia and informatics experts from several Gannett properties, for a deep investigative dive into the proposed wall on our southern border, looking into the feasibility of the initiative, and the lives of the people who would be affected by it.
This was the first time in quite awhile that I’d gotten to work on a specific story, and reminded me how much I enjoy journalism.
My role on this project was to help lead the design efforts of our talented visuals team, working closely with project management and help get things done. We had designers located in Washington, Phoenix and Des Moines working together, so the biggest issue was just ensuring that we had good communication and that issues wewre surfaced and dealt with quickly.
There were a lot of late nights put in, as we worked to manipulate our content management system, in order to get this to look as good as it does – but it was worth it.
I helped art direct some screens and designed other aspects outright – such as the navigation – but it was a true team effort, and I’m proud to have been a part of the team on this project.
It’s a fantastic read, and well worth your time.
